Report finds toxic chemicals in baby furniture
Baby nursery cribs, changing tables and dressers can emit
formaldehyde at levels that could increase the risk of developing
allergies and asthma according to our new report, “Toxic Baby
Furniture: The Latest Case for Making Products Safe from the Start.”
The Environment California Research & Policy Center worked with an
independent laboratory to test 21 products intended for use in a
nursery. Six produced levels of formaldehyde emissions associated with
potential harm to children.
First our research revealed toxics in crib mattresses; then toxics
in plastic teethers, toys and baby bottles; and now toxics in baby
furniture. Environment California is working on the Green Chemistry
Initiative, which has the potential to protect children by requiring
all toxic chemicals to be replaced with safer alternatives.
