Environment California Blasts President Bush for Underhanded Attack on State's Right to Fight Global Warming

Statement of Legislative Director Dan Jacobson

The threat to global warming is real. In order to stave off the worst effects of global warming action needs to be taken immediately. For years California and Governor Schwarzenegger have been leading the country and the world in the fight to reduce the worst impacts of global warming.

On the one hand we support the President's action to increase the fuel economy for cars in our country. This is over due and critical. However, to slip into the regulations a rule that will undercut the state's authority to fight global warming is wrong.

When it comes to global warming California's Achilles heal is emissions from our cars and trucks. California has taken a leadership role in reducing our CO2 emissions from cars and trucks. Following our leadership a dozen other states have also adopted similar standards. By denying the state the right to fight global warming we are taking an arrow out of the quiver in the
fight to reduce CO2 pollutants and reduce the dangerous impacts of global warming.

We thank the Governor and Secretary Nichols for their leadership on this issue and urge all Governor's to join with Governor Schwarzenegger in his fight to allow states to continue to lead in  the fight to protect our planet.
