Contact Bernadette Del Chiaro (916) 446-8062 x 103 Environment California Takes Positions on 2008 Ballot InitiativesEnvironment California has taken a position on three ballot initiatives on the November 2008 ballot. The organization is endorsing Prop 1A, to build a high speed rail line between northern and southern California. "Building high speed rail in California is an important long-term global warming solution and a way to further reduce California’s dependence on fossil fuels," said Bernadette Del Chiaro, clean energy advocate with Environment California. Environment California has taken an opposed position to Proposition 7. The organization says its reasons for opposing the renewable energy inititaive include the fact that it will lock in compliance loopholes for utilities, will potentially exclude small-scale solar from the state's renewable energy goals and will weaken oversight of polluting trash incinerators. "While there is a lot to like about Prop 7, the initiative has too many serious policy flaws to win our support," explained Del Chiaro. "In fact, this initiative could send California in the wrong direction on renewable energy."
Lastly, Environment California opposes Proposition 10. Prop 10 is the initiative that is being bank-rolled by natural gas tycoon, T. Boone Pickens. Environment California is opposed to this initaitive because as it is written, it would funnel billions of taxpayer dollars primarly toward natural gas vehicles. "Californians should not be fooled by clever packaging and fancy TV ads," stated Del Chiaro. "This initiative is essentially a special interest give-away to the natural gas industry that promises no environmental benefits."
Environment California has also taken a position on two candiates running for political office in 2008. Environment California endroses Barack Obama for President and Jerry McNerney for U.S. Congress in the 11th District.
