Executive Summary

This briefing paper outlines how the goal of acquiring 20% renewable energy at the Los Angeles Department Water and Power (DWP) by 2017 can be reasonably acquired at prices comparable to the cost of conventional generation. For conservative planning, this paper provides worst-case estimates showing that reaching this baseline goal of 20% renewably energy by 2017 would cost no more than an average of 66 cents per month on the average residential electric bill assuming all costs associated with the increase in renewable energy were passed along to the consumer – only one of several options available to the City of Los Angeles as summarized here.
